Overview:
The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a full time Laboratory and Analytical Support position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Chapel Hill, NC.
The Office of Research and Development at the EPA supports high-quality research to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its environmental goals.
Research is conducted in a broad range of environmental areas by scientists in EPA laboratories and at universities across the country.
What the EPA project is aboutThe Center for Public Health and Environmental Assessment (CPHEA) provides the science needed to understand the complex interrelationship between people and nature in support of assessments and policy to protect human health and ecological integrity.
Within CPHEA, the Public Health and Environmental Systems Division (PHESD) focuses on the interrelationships between people and their environment, promotes human health and well-being, and fosters healthy and safe communities.
Part of the research within PHESD focuses on the adverse public health impacts of environmental exposures.
The research focuses on understanding the human health effects of air and water pollutants and other environmental exposures.
Responsibilities:
As a team member, you will assist researchers with laboratory experiments, maintenance and management, sample inventory and management, data analysis, as well as some administrative support functions.
Analytical and laboratory responsibilities will include:
Handling, collection and transport of human samples such as blood and/or saliva; Collection of environmental samples (air, water, soil) in the field; Assisting with on-site sample receiving, inventory and processing; Maintaining sample inventories and logs; Maintaining, managing and organizing laboratory facilities, supplies and reagents; Preparing reagents and solutions; Following protocols and plate designs to conduct immunoassays using platforms such as ELISA, Meso-Scale Discovery, and Luminex; Clearly documenting all activities and experiments using a standard laboratory notebook; Maintaining inventories of laboratory reagents; Sterilizing and cleaning glassware and cleaning laboratory facilities; Analyzing data, preparing summaries of results and presenting them to EPA investigators; Assisting in assay development and optimization by troubleshooting results and suggesting solutions; and Conducting literature reviews, obtaining and reviewing publications, summarizing the literature.
Communications and administrative-related responsibilities will include:
Filing and organizing records; Administering questionnaires, obtaining informed consent from study volunteers; Assisting the team in developing oral presentations results and impacts using graphics and other interactive formats; Assisting in summary analysis documents of results and impacts from data analyses; and Assisting in writing study results in manuscripts, presentations, and fact sheets.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education Prior experience working in a laboratory environment and familiarity with general laboratory safety and maintenance; At least 16 semester hours of laboratory-based science courses or equivalent education credentials; Prior experience with basic laboratory procedures such as single and multichannel pipetting, preparing dilutions, using plate washers, centrifuging, sterilization, sanitation, and preparing reagents; Prior experience working with environmental, biological and/or human samples including:
sample organization, labeling, receiving, inventory, and processing; Organizational skills, including experience developing and maintain laboratory and sample inventories, and maintaining record systems; At least one undergraduate level course in statistics, and experience conducting basic statistical analysis including correlation, linear regression and summarizing descriptive statistics; Experience using Microsoft Excel to summarize and manipulate data files, manage data, create graphics, and conduct basic data analysis; and Strong written, oral, and electronic communication skills.

This job will be located EPAs facility in Chapel Hill, NC.
Salary:
Selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $23.
37 for hours worked.
Hours:
Full-time.
Travel:
Occasional overnight travel may be required.
Expected start date:
The position is full time and expected to begin August 2023.
The selected applicant will become a temporary employee of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA.
The contract renews each May through 2025.

Qualifications:
Be at least 18 years of age and Have earned at least a bachelors degree in the biological, health, or environmental sciences from an accredited university or college within the last 24 months and Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.
EPA ORD employees, their spouses, and children are not eligible to participate in this program.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
